Bike Lanes, Crosswalks, and School Safety |
DBorgquist writes, "You may have noticed the new green paint markings in some of the bike lanes around town, or the arrows in the roadway. This is a new project that Ada County Highway District is doing and we are happy to participate with the new method of bringing attention to bicycle safety."
|
The purpose of the arrows and paint is to remind drivers that they need to share the road with bikes. The green painted area is a transition area for cars and bikes that reminds each to use caution. The arrows or "sharrows" as they are called brings attention to share the roadway with the bikes, even if there is not a bike lane.
As with most summers, this one has proven to bring out more children walking and biking in the downtown area. Crosswalk safety is a high priority and we would ask that you pay special attention in these areas to allow pedestrians to use the crosswalk by stopping when they are occupied. We have had several requests to put up additional bright green crosswalk signs in the roadway but it is not possible to put them up at every intersection.
School will be starting at the end of the month and we would like to remind everyone to be especially careful in and around school zones. The speed limit drops to 20 miles per hour when in the school zone. Please educate your children to use crosswalks and to wear helmets when riding bicycles and skateboards.
Enjoy the rest of your summer!
